The wartime/military Collection
Amongst our collection, we have many artefacts relating to the wartime period, including many items on military nursing. As well as hospital records which date from the period, we have personal letters and memoirs, photographs and medals.
Many of the medals and awards were presented to Ethel Hutchings A.R.R.C.
Miss Hutchings was a Nursing Sister in Egypt during the First World War and later Chief Lady Superintendent with the Auxiliary nursing service, in the Office of the Director-General, Indian Medical Service during Second World War. She received the 1914 Star, The British War Medal, The Royal Red Cross and the Victory Medal for her service in Egypt in 1914, for which she also received a mention in dispatches, and an O.B E for her later work, received in 1946.
We also have in our collection a Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service Medal (QAIMNS) and an Auxiliary Nursing Service badge, which may have also belonged to her.
The collection also contains artefacts relating to the blood donor registry and blood transfusion services.
